Some tools of roadway maintenance we utilize are a Seal Coating Program, Street Overlay Program and Street Cleaning Program. Other processes used to sustain the roadways are crack sealing, skim coating, hot patching, cold patching and injection patching.
Most of our maintenance activities are driven by the seasons and are governed by many variables (i.e. weather, equipment availability and contractor success). Included in this report is a seasonal operations matrix representing our major activities and their approximate time frames.
Streets staff is also responsible for repairs to the road surface due to utility repairs performed by Utilities staff. Examples include water main breaks, fire hydrant replacement and water valve repairs. To report a pothole or other street maintenance issue, call the street maintenance 24-hour hotline at 345-0600.
Snow removal is another responsibility of Streets with support from the Parks and Forestry and Utilities crew. Snow removal is a dynamic process with many variables. A rough measure of efficiency is to have a balanced area and route design so that all of our assets finish their assigned tasks at approximately the same time. Our snow removal plan is re-evaluated on a seasonal basis and adjusted as we continue to work to maximize our time and equipment.
The City’s Central Garage and its team of mechanics and staff are always critical to any successes that the Streets has in its pursuit of serving our citizens efficiently.
This last year was a very busy and successful year for Streets. With the continued growth of the City of Mankato, our lane miles of road to maintain have continued to grow. Streets staff intend to meet these continuing challenges with more efficient use of equipment and techniques and continued coordination with other Public Works staff.
