The Mankato Department of Public Safety has both full-time and volunteer firefighters. The combination full-time/volunteer makeup provides good service to the community at a very reasonable cost. On the full-time side, lieutenants provide leadership and supervision in areas such as incident command, fire prevention and education, investigations, training and station and equipment maintenance. Full-time firefighters provide the expertise in training, inspections, investigations and hazardous material responses. Volunteers provide the needed staffing, primarily at night, to handle fire, medical and other emergency calls for service.
