Engineering staff solves problems and makes things work more efficiently. Staff oversees the planning and designing of new construction and reconstruction of Mankato’s sanitary sewers, water mains, storm drainage systems, streets and sidewalks and other projects to support residents and businesses. They also inspect construction, review and critique new site plans, developments and private improvement projects to ensure consistent application of city codes and standards, which improves neighborhood appearance and provides a heightened sense of livability. In addition, staff monitors, analyzes and modifies traffic patterns in an effort to calm traffic, ensuring safety for drivers and pedestrians.

Highway 14 Report The City is part of a coalition of highway users that advocate improvements on Trunk Highway 14 between Rochester and west to New Ulm/Sleepy Eye. Efforts to complete a four-lane highway between North Mankato and Rochester are part of a 25-year effort to improve east/west transportation across the southern part of the state. A main concern is safety and a goal is to eliminate the fatalities on this frequently-used highway.
Mankato Traffic Counts Find out about Mankato's traffic counts on major streets. Counts are updated every four years cooperatively with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Other counts are taken by city staff or by contract as needs dictate.
Mailbox Specifications The U.S. Postal Service has established truck routes in most of the newer areas of Mankato. Placement of mailboxes is the responsibility of the property owner. They are permitted within the right of way within the areas designated according to these rules. Neighborhood common boxes are placed by the Postal Service with walkup availability. These will be meeting the same standards as the private mailboxes within the right of way. The long-term goal of the Postal Service is to minimize the number of people served by front door service in an effort to improve their efficiency.
Sidewalk and Trail Plan The City has a sidewalk and trail plan, which will provide sidewalks on at least one side of the street in residential areas and on both sides of the street along major high traffic routes, making sure that all school walking routes are off-street. The City trail system provides a looping trail concentric to the City center along with radial connections to provide bicycle and multi-use connections from home to shopping to work, as well as recreation. Since 1998, an effort to link parks to the City trail system has been part the City's master parks plan, as well as the sidewalk plan.
