Importance of the U.S. Census
The City of Mankato relies on an accurate Census count to ensure our community receives adequate federal funding for different programs, the correct number of Congressional seats, and for community planning and service efforts at the local level.
In challenging economic times, it’s even more important to have a complete and accurate count of our population. For every person counted, the federal government allocates $1,000 per person, per year, for 10 years. This money is returned to our community where we live and work. This federal funding assists the City of Mankato in providing essential services such as sewer maintenance, snow plowing and public safety. For every person not counted, our community may lose up to $10,000 over the next 10 years until the next Census.
A complete and accurate Census count:
- Determines how federal dollars are distributed back to communities.
- Impacts the development of new businesses, highways and schools.
- Affects programs such as health and hospital services and public transportation.
- Determines the number congressional seats per state and how many representatives we have in Congress who can advocate on our behalf.
